The process of finding a therapist can be difficult, even overwhelming. Yet taking that first step and talking with a therapist who is understanding, compassionate and clear minded, can be very relieving. Whether you choose to meet with me or one of my excellent colleagues, meeting with a therapist who is genuinely interested in you and trained to help you deal with the difficulties you are having, can potentially make a big difference in the short and long term quality of your life.
My Practice: I have been in private practice for more than 25 years and over that time I have treated individuals with relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. Childhood abuse and neglect can also be sources of pain and struggle for some of the individuals I see. A safe environment for talking and listening is essential for a successful treatment and with this in mind, I work with each individual to create an approach that addresses his or her particular needs.
How I work: I practice psychoanalytic psychotherapy, a process that looks at the causes of difficulties and also actively addresses the management of symptoms. I have found that combining a cognitive behavioral approach (recognizing how you "talk" inside your mind to yourself) with an exploring approach (to discover underlying beliefs that are often not very conscious), has the most benefit to people who are wanting help.
My Background: I graduated from Stanford University after which I received an M.A. in Sociology and a few years later a second M.A. in Counseling from San Jose State. After becoming licensed as a psychotherapist I have pursued programs and courses to add to my skills and knowledge:
- Graduate of PINC (Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California)
- 2 years of advanced training at I.C.P. (Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis)
- 2 years of post graduate intensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy
- On-going consultation and supervision as part of my professional training
In addition, I provide consultation and supervision to licensed and pre-licensed therapists.
