Evelyn Peairs, MFT
I honor your courage as you seek help with personal problems.
A safe and confidential environment is essential for you to make positive changes. I am gentle, empathic and effective in my work. The issues I can help you with include:
- depression, anxiety and trauma
- eating disorders and body image issues
- relationship conflict
- addictive behaviors
- parenting
Perhaps you can identify with one or more statements below:
"I feel sad, guilty, angry, anxious, and depressed most of the time."
Life's challenges can activate intense negative emotions and bring to the fore past traumatic events. These states can put a damper on the enjoyment of life, disrupt personal relationships, impact your career and put your ability to be a good parent at risk. I work with you to decrease your emotional pain and to create a better life for yourself. Through our therapeutic relationship, we relate and think together in a safe and contained space. We consider your unique present and past and the choices you have for the future.
"I'm always thinking about eating and how terrible I look."
You may know you're trying to self-medicate painful feelings with over and under eating. I can help you make sense of your difficulties and make positive changes. We discover together new insights and truths from all you share with me. Together we work on freeing you from unhealthy coping behaviors. Through our work, you grow toward eating to nourish your body while being nurtured by those who care about you.
"We both get angry when we try to communicate."
Irritation, blame, and withdrawal can overtake your relationship. I help you both by creating time and space for listening, thinking, and communicating more effectively. Together, I help you each reconnect with vulnerable feelings, then with each other. I guide you to make good decisions together with greater clarity and capacity to understand and respond to one another with empathy.
"I think our teenager has an eating disorder."
When symptoms of problematic eating escalate, your child may be diagnosed with an eating disorder of compulsive over-eating, bulimia, or anorexia. These are serious life-threatening illnesses and I urge you to seek professional help at the first signs of difficulty. I bring expertise gained from work with many pre-teens, teens and adults suffering from disordered eating and diagnosable eating disorders. I work closely with your son or daughter and keep you abreast of your child's progress with scheduled parent meetings. I also work as a team with your pediatrician and with other professionals providing care for your daughter or son.
I've been licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist and in private psychotherapy practice for 17 years during which time I have treated a broad range of patients and also supervised interns. My early career experience includes individual and group psychotherapy on an inpatient eating disorders unit, as well as in an agency setting where I saw patients and supervised interns. In addition to my MA degree in Clinical Psychology, I have participated in extensive study and supervised clinical work from a psychoanalytic perspective. I continue to enjoy learning in consultation and study groups by sharing knowledge and skills with peers and those more expert in my field.
