Sondra Rice, MFT
Welcome!
It's sometimes hard to choose a therapist who will best fit your needs. I have attempted to answer a few questions here, but welcome a phone call to discuss your concerns in more detail if you wish. My aim is to ascertain that I am a good fit for you. Please phone me at 408-793-0138, or send an email to me at sondra@sondrarice.com.
What is your background?
I have a Master of Science degree in Clinical psychology and hold a current license as a Marriage and Family Therapist. I have training in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy to help you understand underlying causes for painful emotions and behaviors. I also use strategies and techniques common to cognitive-behavioral therapy to help you develop alternative ways of thinking about problems. I actively build on my foundation of clinical skills by taking courses, seminars, and participating in consultation.
How do you work with individuals?
I provide a safe, supportive, reliable setting that builds trust between us. Because I believe each individual is unique, my treatment plan for you will reflect a thorough, flexible, and ongoing attention to what works best to help you feel better. I use well-practiced skills from several psychotherapy models to develop a treatment plan to best help you as an individual.
Treatment can be short-term or extended, but emotional safety is an important factor. When you feel safe, the upsetting, even chaotic churning in your mind can begin to quiet, your thoughts are more accessible, and feelings that were once unbearable can be managed in a way that is helpful to you in making good choices.
I am interested helping you to alleviate emotional pain, develop more effective coping strategies, and achieve more comfortable relationships with others. As we continue to work together, we may look at the complexities of our developing relationship to see how it might play out in your relationships with others.
How long are sessions? How long is a treatment?
Sessions are 50 minutes for individuals and 60 minutes for couples.
Talk therapy is very helpful for healing emotional pain, and most people benefit from more than one or two sessions, especially if disturbances are longstanding. You may have insurance that pays for all or part of your fee.
What is your fee?
I work within a reasonable fee range that takes into consideration the circumstances and needs of each individual. We can discuss what is affordable for you. My regular fees are consistent with other therapists' in this area. I expect payment (cash or checks) at the time of service unless we agree on another payment schedule.

How do you work with couples?
We meet to discuss your concerns and identify sources of conflict that threaten the safety and comfort of a secure relationship. I help to guide you, without judgment, to explore the underlying emotions and motivations that are sometimes difficult to bring into awareness. I work with you to help you find ways to soften and shift the negative cycles of sharp, painful interactions to positive cycles of comfort, caring and bonding. Such changes can result in new ways of being close and secure.
Do you take insurance?
Currently, I am an "In-Network" provider for Aetna U.S. Health Care. If you have other insurance that is a PPO or POS, I can still be your therapist. In this case, you most likely will receive partial reimbursement for my services as an "Out-of-Network" provider. In this case, you may pay me directly, and I provide you with monthly paperwork to submit to your insurance for reimbursement directly to you.
Please contact your insurance company to obtain accurate information about your coverage.
